What it does and how a reverse osmosis works

An Inverse Osmosis system has been used for several years, essentially in desalination, that is, in the transformation of salt water or saline into drinking water.

All Reverse Osmosis systems work in the same way and are similar in appearance and equipment by which they are composed.

By the quality of the starting water and the quality of water that is to be produced, the size and quality of the membranes to be installed is selected and this is the main difference from one system to the other.

      Benefits of an Inverse Osmosis

      How a reverse osmosis works

The phenomenon of osmosis has fundamental importance in nature since selective transport through membranes is essential to life. Osmosis involves the action of water when two solutions of different concentrations are separated by a semipermeable membrane. The water will flow from the least concentrated solution to the most concentrated solution until a balance is reached.

Reverse osmosis is the opposite of natural osmosis, that is, by applying a mechanical force, through high pressure pumps, water will flow through the membrane, from the most concentrated solution (saltwater/brackish water, or with impurities) to the less concentrated solution, and the membrane will retain salts and/or impurities.
Below is an explanatory picture of the processes of osmosis and reverse osmosis.

Reverse osmosis works by means of a high pressure pump to increase pressure on the salt side and force water through the semipermeable membrane, leaving almost all (about 95-99%) of salts dissolved in rejection. The amount of pressure required depends on the salt concentration of the feed water.

Desalinated water that has been demineralized or deionized is called permeated (or product). The flow of water that carries concentrated contaminants that do not pass through the membrane is called rejector concentrate.
